ABTA report shows rise in demand for family cruises

The new ABTA Holiday Habits 2022 report shows that more families have been on a cruise and 64 per cent are keen to go again

ABTA’s new Holiday Habits 2022 report shows a strong desire to cruise among the young family market.

According to the just-released report, 64 per cent of young families are keen to sail again in the future – the highest of any life stage or age group.

This could be a result of many new-to-cruise families being introduced to life on the water by last summer’s hugely popular domestic ‘seacations’ launched during lockdown.

The survey also revealed that almost half (49 per cent) of this group have now been on a cruise, compared with less than a third (29 per cent) in 2018.

Meanwhile, more than a third (35 per cent) of people have been on a cruise holiday at some point, which is consistent with figures from 2021 and represents a 10 per cent jump in demand compared with 2018.

In terms of types of trip, out of the top 10 types of holidays taken in the past 12 months, nine per cent took a cruise in 2022, compared to 10 per cent in 2019. For comparison, beach holidays were the most popular (34 per cent and 41 per cent), followed by city breaks (32 per cent and 46 per cent).
