Ambassador expands fleet with purchase of second ship

Ambassador Cruise Line has bought a second ship which will begin sailing in 2023.

The ship will be named Ambition and will offer no-fly sailings targeted at the 50-plus market like its sister ship Ambience.

Ambition will depart from a number of UK ports, including London Tilbury, Newcastle, Dundee, Belfast, Liverpool, Bristol and Falmouth.

The ship’s programme is still being finalised and will be on sale from spring 2022.

The 1,200-passenger Ambition will have 714 cabins, 125 of which have balconies and 113 of which are 62 sqm suites.  There will also be two restaurants, a bistro-style café, four bars, lounges and a pub. Other facilities will include a theatre, casino, card room, library and craft studio, as well as a wellness centre, gym, two swimming pools and a range of shops.

Ambassador is the first British cruise line to be launched since 2010. The line’s first ship Ambience will make its maiden voyage in April.

Ambition was bought outright from Costa Crociere which operated her under their AIDA brand, as AIDAMira, mainly targeting the German market.

Before entering service with Ambassador Cruise Line, the ship will be upgraded to include the latest emission reduction technologies to secure IMO Tier III compliance. This will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by approximately 95 per cent compared to current standards.

Along with installing updated ballast and sewage water treatment systems, both ships in the Ambassador Cruise Line fleet will be among around 10 per cent of the current world cruise fleet authorised to sail in strictly environmentally protected seas.

CEO Christian Verhounig said: “We are delighted with the warm reception given to the introduction of Ambassador to the market – a new brand, proposition and our first ship. This announcement of the addition of Ambition to the fleet reflects our confidence and willingness to invest in the future of Ambassador and the cruise sector. We are particularly excited to be offering regional departure options for Ambition in 2023, whilst also offering guests who travel from London Tilbury a greater choice of sailings and ships on which to enjoy them. Clearly, we are all focused on the success of Ambience’s maiden season which commences in April this year, but we believe existing and new guests, as well as our trade partners, will be thrilled to hear about Ambassador’s growth plans.”
