Eight top destinations for family cruises in 2022

From Alaska to Iceland, discover eight family-friendly cruise destinations

1. Juneau, Alaska 

For an adventurous summer destination bursting with bucket-list family experiences, look to Juneau. 

On Holland America Line’s seven-night Alaskan Explorer sailing, families will visit Alaska’s state capital and can pan for gold on an underground gold mine tour and spot wildlife. Local residents include bald eagles, bears and deer. 

Other itinerary highlights include Glacier Bay’s dramatic scenery and the world’s longest zip-line in Icy Strait Point. Propose sea kayaking in Sitka, visiting the vast collection of totems in Ketchikan and the Butterfly Garden in Victoria. Expect plenty of opportunities to spot humpback and orca whales.

2. Akureyri, Iceland

Families can enjoy a summer holiday with a Nordic twist in Akureyri. Suggest a trip to explore the ancient Dimmuborgir lava fields and the bubbling mud and hissing fumaroles of Namafjall Mountain. 

The city features in Celebrity Cruises’ 12-night Iceland and Ireland cruise. Departing round-trip from Amsterdam, families will have two days to explore Akureyri, during the Akureyri Summer Arts festival. 

With two days in Reykjavik clients can sample local seafood and visit the theatres, museums and observatories. The cruise also calls at Belfast, Waterford and Cork.

Doha, Qatar 

All eyes will be on Qatar in November, as the destination hosts the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022. With the final scheduled for December 18, footie-mad families can soak up the post-tournament atmosphere in Doha before hopping on board MSC Cruises’ nine-night round-trip Emirates cruise on December 20. The Christmas sailing calls at Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas Island and Dammam in Saudi Arabia.

They will be among the first to sail on MSC World Europa, which launches in December and will be the line’s first LNG-powered vessel.

4. Barcelona, Spain 

Tempt multi-generational families with a summer cruise from Barcelona. 

Customers can explore the city’s highlights before setting sail on Oceania Cruises’ Barcelona to Lisbon itinerary. Recommend admiring masterpieces by Gaudi at Parc Güell and seeing La Sagrada Familia. 5. Carlisle Bay, Barbados 

In 2022, Barbados will spend its first full year as an independent Republic, and its sandy beaches are the perfect spot for families to spend a sun-soaked Christmas Day. 

On Princess Cruises’ 10-night Southern Caribbean with Barbados sailing, families can spend December 25 visiting the marine park in Carlisle Bay and snorkelling with turtles.

6. Amsterdam, the Netherlands  

Famed for its iconic tulips, Amsterdam will be the perfect destination for avid gardeners in 2022, as the nearby city of Almere hosts the once-a-decade Floriade horticultural expo. 

For multi-generational adult families, suggest Scenic’s Windmills, Tulips and Belgian Delights with Floriade itinerary. The seven-night sailing from Amsterdam calls at Dordrecht, Veere, Antwerp, Arnhem and Hoorn. Customers then return to Amsterdam to explore Floriade. 7. St Petersburg, Russia

Families can kick-start the summer holidays with a dose of history and culture in St Petersburg, before enjoying onboard circus workshops.  

The normally adults-only Ambassador Cruise Lines is offering several multi-generational sailings, including its 14-night Baltic Treasures and St Petersburg itinerary. It includes Cirque at Sea, with a range of performances and circus lessons. 

Families will have two days to marvel at St Petersburg’s sites, including the Winter Palace and the Hermitage Museum.

8. The Norwegian Fjords, Norway
