Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship Norwegian Prima has been christened at a star-studded ceremony in Reykjavík.

The first of six ships in the Prima Class, Norwegian Prima was unveiled to more than 2,500 guests in the Icelandic capital. The ship’s godmother, the singer Katy Perry, took to the main stage in the Prima Theater & Club to officially name and christen the vessel with the ceremonial champagne bottle break across the ship’s hull.

She went on to perform a number of her big hits, including California Gurls, Teenage Dream, Roar and Firework.

“It was so much fun to sprinkle some fairy godmother dust on Norwegian Prima and send her on her way to sail the high seas,” said Perry.

“I always appreciate a family vacation and a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so I was happy to wish all the vacationing guests a happy bon voyage!”

Harry Sommer, NCL chief executive, said the event was “the pinnacle of everything our 55-year history has been preparing us for”.

Attendees were also treated to performances by Icelandic singer-songwriter Bríet, who joined the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, and 2021 Eurovision Song Contest fan favourites Daði og Gagnamagnið. There was also a captivating LED light show by artist Olafur Eliasson.

Norwegian Prima will depart on its inaugural voyage to Northern Europe from the UK, Netherlands and Denmark from September 3, before moving to the US for itineraries to the Caribbean from New York, Galveston and Miami.
