The pop icon will christen the ship in August and perform at the ceremony in Reykjavík

Norwegian Cruise Line has revealed pop icon and American Idol judge Katy Perry as the godmother of its new ship Norwegian Prima, which launches this August.

As godmother Perry will fulfil the longstanding maritime tradition of blessing and officially naming Norwegian Prima, the first of six vessels in the line’s Prima Class. She will also perform during the christening ceremony, before Norwegian Prima sets sail on its inaugural voyages from Reykjavík. The vessel will be the first major cruise ship christened in the Icelandic capital.

Harry Sommer, president and CEO of NCL said: “We are so excited to welcome Katy Perry, a one-of-a-kind artist and worldwide sensation, as godmother of Norwegian Prima. We are so incredibly proud that she will be part of the Norwegian Cruise Line family and look forward to launching our beautiful, innovative ship with her in August.”

Perry said her favourite way to spend her holidays with her family “is on the water”. She added: “Every morning that you wake up, you get to experience an incredible new view. I love that I get to christen [Norwegian Prima] with my good vibrations, and I’m so excited for this new, beautiful, high-end, high-tech ship to take the seas, and provide once-in-a-lifetime vacations for so many families.”

The ship will offer inaugural voyages to Northern Europe from Southampton, Amsterdam and Reykjavík from August 12. It will then sail to New York in October for Bermuda sailings, before offering Caribbean itineraries from Galveston and Miami later in the month.

Last week NCL announced additional details of the food and drink offerings on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva.
