Low water levels on the Rhine causing concern
Forecasts suggest the river could be closed to traffic, including cruises, if levels fall below 80cm prompting an “extreme” alert
The Rhine could be closed to shipping traffic – including river cruises – because the heatwave has caused water levels to drop in parts of Germany.
According to a report in The Daily Telegraph, water levels in the town of Kaub in the west of Germany have fallen beneath one metre and forecasts suggest they could soon reach 80cm, which would prompt an “extreme” alert and mean some vessels can no longer pass through.
There have been warnings over water levels in the Rhine since early this year, with levels at Kaub previously falling below one metre in March following an unusually dry winter.
