Silversea Cruises officially names Silver Moon

Silversea Cruises’ new luxury ship has been officially named Silver Moon

The latest luxury cruise ship to join Silversea Cruises’ fleet is the 596-guest Silver Moon. The ship was officially named during an evening ceremony in Piraeus, a port near Athens in Greece.

The naming of the ship has marked a milestone in the company’s return to global sailing. Silver Moon is the first ultra-luxury ship from the fleet to set sail following the pandemic, which had seen a 500-day halt to cruising for many companies.

Silver Moon had returned to the port in Athens following its inaugural 10-day voyage around the Greek Isles. Guests on board viewed the event on screens as Gaia Gaja, of Italian Gaja Winery, broke a bottle of champagne on the ship’s bow, in traditional maritime style.

Royal Caribbean Group’s chairman and CEO, Richard Fain, who attended the event, said: “This ceremony is the very first new naming of a ship since, in our case, the pandemic started. But it not only commemorates the particulars of this vessel, but it serves as a great symbol of the fact that cruising has returned for the traveling public.

“The tradition of naming a new vessel goes back thousands of years and symbolises something that’s very powerful. But today it takes on a particular significance because today it symbolises not only the birth of a new vessel but the rebirth of cruising as a tourism destination. The past 17 months have been stressful and frustrating in so many ways to so many of us, but today we can see that the world is opening up and cruising is leading the way and cruising from Greece is a wonderful place for us to be starting at.”

Silver Moon has been created as an evolved version of sister ship Silver Muse. The new ship has reimagined public spaces, a nearly 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio and butler service in all suite categories.

The launch of the ship also serves as the debut for Silversea’s new culinary programme, Sea and Land Taste (SALT). Silver Moon includes three new onboard venues to form the culinary hub with a kitchen, lab and bar where guests are encouraged to further explore each region’s cuisine and culture through dishes, drinks and demonstrations.
