Virgin Voyages delays launch of Resilient Lady until 2023

The ship was due to set sail this August from Athens, but will instead take to the water next spring

Virgin Voyages has pushed back the launch of its third ship, Resilient Lady, from this summer to the spring of 2023. The ship was slated to sail from Athens in mid-August, but will now remain in Genoa while on board work is completed.

In a statement announcing the delay the line said: “As an experience-led brand with strong ties to the Virgin legacy of disrupting industries, Virgin Voyages did not land on this decision lightly, and despite making tremendous strides alongside the cruise industry as a whole, the brand is not immune to the global challenges the world is facing.

“This includes supply chain obstacles, a level of regional uncertainty for international travellers in countries in East Europe, crewing challenges based on government regulations and restrictive Covid entry requirements back into the US.”

All passengers and travel agents affected by the update are currently being contacted by Virgin Voyages, which is promising “generous make good options”, which includes commission protection on all funds paid.

Customers can select a future voyage credit (FVC) of 200%, and those who rebook in 2022 will also be offered another free voyage. Clients can also opt for a full refund plus 25% FVC, and assistance with travel changes and penalties is available.

Virgin Voyages is currently operating its first ship, Scarlet Lady, in the Caribbean, while the second, Valiant Lady, is based in the Mediterranean. Both ships were launched within a year, alongside the line’s new Terminal V at PortMiami, which opened in February. The line has also announced a fourth vessel, Brilliant Lady

CEO Tom McAlpin said this month Virgin Voyages has seen record bookings, with a “significant increase” in on board spend, and explained that the line is currently seeking to close its next round of funding, “which sets us up for continued growth”.

He added: “The momentum that we’re seeing with Scarlet and Valiant Lady is incredible. The fantastic reviews and awards our ships and crew have won are very heartening, so we thank our guests for sailing with us. That is why we remain focused on delivering brilliant vacations, and this pause will ensure we will be ready to go on Resilient.”
