Columbia Group has taken another step toward modernising its global operations by appointing Christina Orfanidou as its new Head of Artificial Intelligence.

The move signals a clear intention to use AI in ways that actually help people do their jobs better, rather than adopting technology for the sake of buzzwords.

In her new role, Orfanidou will be responsible for shaping how AI is introduced across the business, with a strong focus on practical tools that deliver real results.

The company has stressed that this role is about making everyday work smoother and smarter, while keeping people firmly in control.

A Focus on Useful Technology, Not Just Innovation

For Columbia Group, AI isn’t about replacing human expertise it’s about supporting it. CEO and President Mark O’Neil said the company believes artificial intelligence should be used with purpose, responsibility and clear oversight, especially in an industry as complex as maritime services.

The goal is to cut down on time-consuming tasks, like paperwork and repetitive office work, so teams can spend more time on decision-making and problem-solving.

By doing this, Columbia Group hopes AI will improve productivity, support sustainability goals and help modernise workflows without losing the human touch that the industry depends on.

This approach reflects a growing trend across shipping and maritime services, where technology is increasingly seen as a partner rather than a replacement.

Experience That Blends Strategy With Real-World Impact

Orfanidou brings strong experience to the role, having previously led AI services at Deloitte Cyprus. There, she worked closely with organisations on AI adoption, data governance and responsible implementation.

She has also contributed to projects linked to the European Commission, giving her a solid understanding of how innovation and regulation must work together.

Looking ahead, she plans to introduce AI tools that reduce document handling time, improve internal knowledge sharing and modernise systems such as crew assignments.

One of her key goals is to build an internal AI framework that creates solutions designed specifically for Columbia Group’s needs.

The appointment follows similar recent leadership moves across the cruise sector, including Atlas Ocean Voyages strengthening of its regional sales presence in Latin America.

With this appointment, Columbia Group is making it clear that its AI journey will be thoughtful, people-focused and firmly rooted in real operational benefits, not hype.
