Rapper Pitbull chosen as godfather for Norwegian Escape
American rapper Pitbull will name Norwegian Cruise Line’s new ship, Norwegian Escape.
In a break with tradition, the cruise line has announced the vessel will have a godfather, rather than godmother. The musician – real name Armando Christian Pérez – will perform at the christening ceremony in Miami on November 9.
The line said that choosing Pitbull – best known for his UK Number One ‘Timber’ – “reinforces Norwegian’s [style of] non-traditional cruising”.
The ship will homeport year-round in Miami, Florida, where the rapper is from.
Andy Stuart, president of the line, said: “Pitbull has been an excellent partner and great friend to Norwegian Cruise Line.
“A Miami native, he epitomises and contributes to the energy, excitement and local flavour that our ships so proudly embody and we’re excited to build upon our relationship and have him serve in this special role as godfather to Norwegian Escape.”
The 4,200-capacity vessel will become the largest ship in the cruise line’s fleet when it launches. It will be joined by the Norwegian Bliss – set to enter service in March 2017 – and a further two cruise ships within five years.
