A routine Caribbean getaway took an unexpected turn for guests sailing aboard Freedom of the Seas this week. A medical emergency involving one guest forced Royal Caribbean to adjust the ship’s itinerary mid-voyage.
The five-night cruise departed PortMiami on Saturday, January 25, 2026, with Nassau as its first stop. After visiting the Bahamas, the ship was scheduled to continue toward the Western Caribbean.
Late on Sunday evening, however, onboard medical staff determined that a guest required urgent care. To ensure the passenger could safely receive treatment, the ship turned around and headed back to Miami.
Royal Caribbean confirmed the decision was made purely with safety in mind. The guest was safely disembarked once the ship returned to its homeport.
Cayman Islands Call Cancelled, New Port Added
Because of the detour, the ship’s planned visit to George Town in the Cayman Islands was no longer possible. That stop has now been officially cancelled from the itinerary.
Instead, Freedom of the Seas will now visit Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. The new port call is scheduled for Wednesday, giving guests a chance to explore a different destination.
Royal Caribbean informed guests that any shore excursions booked for George Town would be refunded. Those refunds will be issued as onboard credit and can be used anywhere on the ship.
Any unused balance will be returned to guests’ original payment methods after the cruise ends. The line emphasized that it would always prioritize guest well-being in situations like this.
Guests Encouraged to Enjoy Grand Bahama Experience
In its onboard communication, Royal Caribbean highlighted activities available in Grand Bahama. Guests can explore nature trails, botanical gardens, beaches, or simply relax by the sea.
Popular spots include Rand’s Nature Center and the Garden of the Groves. For those who prefer downtime, beach bars and crystal-clear waters offer a laid-back alternative.
The cancellation follows a series of recent itinerary adjustments across the region, including Royal Caribbean’s decision to skip Costa Maya after pier damage, which impacted another Western Caribbean sailing.
While itinerary changes can be disappointing, many guests expressed understanding. Medical diversions are a reality of cruising, and safety remains the top priority.
Freedom of the Seas is expected to return to PortMiami on Thursday, January 29, as planned. Despite the changes, the cruise line hopes guests still enjoy the remainder of their vacation.
